It was early November this year when I saw my first set of Christmas lights (as opposed to Halloween lights which seem to be so popular). At first it seemed like the folks in this house were rushing the season, and indeed my reaction was, “Man, I am just not ready.” However, as I spoke to one of our senior citizens about that feeling, she said something that changed my perspective. She said, “Well, it just goes to show you that people just can’t wait for Christmas.” Then and there I decided to see Christmas lights in a whole new way. I see them as lights in the darkness illuminating the way for the coming of the Newborn King.
John says, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
When you think about it, it is never too early to get excited about the coming of the Perfect One, the Messiah. So don’t despise the early arrival of Christmas lights on homes and carols playing in the Mall. Rather, use them as pointers toward your rejoicing at the coming of the King.
So, if you have not done so already, go ahead and get those lights out of the attic, untangle the strands and proclaim the defeat of darkness through Jesus Christ our Lord. I know that I will (but only on the first floor).
Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas season.
