1 Cor. 16:13
Weekly Verse
Mark 9:23
Jesus was coming down the mountain from revealing His glory and having a conversation with Elijah and Moses. On the way down He spoke to the disciples about not revealing what they saw until He had risen. Upon their arrival to camp they noticed a commotion and Jesus was confused as to why.
Have you ever arrived at a destination and it was not as you had expected? Explain what you expected and how was it different? Talk about the expectations you have about your destination currently.
When Jesus arrived there was a father who ran up to Him. The father fell to his knees and begged Jesus to heal his son. The disciples mentioned that they could not heal the boy of this evil spirit. At that moment Jesus rebuked the disciples. He told them they had little faith and wondered how long He was to stay with this generation. Jesus was telling them that they needed to listen to Him because He would soon be gone.
Has there been a time where you lacked faith in something? Discuss as a family what it takes to have a strong faith and what can you do if your faith wavers. Maybe talk about a strategy as family for expressing your faith on a daily basis.
When Jesus told the father to bring the boy to Him, the spirit threw the boy down. The boy’s body started convulsing and he foamed at the mouth. Jesus rebuked the demon and told it to not enter the boy again. When this happened, the disciples wondered why they were unable to cast the demon out. Jesus told them that that type of demon could only be cast out through prayer and fasting.
When was the last time you prayed and fasted for something? What is something that you would pray and fast for? Discuss what fasting might look like for your family.
GO DEEPER: The disciples tried but failed and needed Jesus. Talk about a time where you needed Jesus to do something for you.
