Today’s lesson – Jonah 1-4

Discuss listening and recognizing. Disobedience is something that God does not take lightly. When He told Jonah to go to Nineveh and Jonah went the other way, God directed Jonah back to Nineveh by way of whale. Talk about following directions while driving — stop signs are there for everybody's protection, and following the road directions for a one-way street is very important. Talk about how we should follow God’s direction and voice the same way we should follow the rules of the road.

At home...

Read Jonah 1-4

Jonah was reluctant to go to Nineveh. He didn’t want to preach to those people because he didn’t think they were worth it. God thought the opposite. He loved the people of Nineveh and knew that if they were to follow Him, they could make a huge impact on the surrounding villages. BUT, God needed Jonah to go and preach to them and Jonah didn’t want to go.

Have you ever NOT done something God has told you to do? What was the outcome? Did you end up doing it, or does the choice to not do it weigh on you?

Around the table...

Jonah got swallowed by a whale! But not digested. Then God commanded that whale (fish) to spit Jonah up on the shores of Nineveh. When we eat we usually enjoy our meal. We like the way it was prepared and enjoy the company. God commanded this fish to eat Jonah. Humans aren’t really its desired food, but the fish did it anyway because God told it to do so. The fish played a major role in following God’s will and making Jonah finish the task God had set out for him to do.

What thing or person has helped you finish a task God has given you?

GO DEEPER: Talk about God’s glory after Jonah preached to the people of Nineveh. How have you seen God’s glory after a task from the Lord was completed?
