Today’s lesson – Mary & Martha

Martha was always in a hurry. She was excited and wanted everything to go perfectly for Jesus’ visit to her house.

Have you ever been in a hurry? Rushed out the door to get to church on time? Sometimes we are like Martha — we get in such a hurry we forget to focus on the excitement of our destination. Being in a hurry and getting flustered can overtake the feeling of excitement we should have when setting out for our destination.

Were you hurried today? Take a moment and discuss why you felt hurried and how you can re-focus on the excitement of the day.

Read Luke 10:38-42

Mary and Martha were visited by Jesus. Martha, being a perfectionist, lost sight of what was really happening. Do you know somebody like that? Always busy? It’s not always a bad thing, but in this lesson we learned that we need to have balance and have a “Mary” in our life to help focus our priorities.

As a family, discuss your priorities. Share your top 3 day-to-day priorities. Discuss where you can sit at Jesus’ feet. How can you make this a “must do” in your day-to-day priorities?

Around the table...

Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. She sat and listened to Him and what He was teaching about. We are not privy to what was being said, but it must have been important because Mary didn't move. She just sat there and listened, soaking in all of Jesus.

Discuss as a family your “Mary” moments. When was the last time you were able to sit and cast your worries at Jesus’ feet and listen to what He was saying? Talk about how you can make this happen.

GO DEEPER: Discuss as a family your “Martha” moments. When you missed the moment to sit at Jesus’ feet because of a distraction, and how can you turn it into a “Mary” moment.
