Family Connection - Ten Commandments

In the car...

Challenge Verse
Deut. 7:9
Weekly Verse
Exodus 19:15a

Today’s lesson – Exodus 19:1-20:17

Discuss preparation. God told Moses to prepare the Israelites to meet Him. God gave Moses a set of instructions for the Israelites to follow. God told them to change their clothes, take a bath, and not do bad things. These instructions seemed pretty basic, but there were thousands of Israelites! Not an easy task in three days.

How do you prepare? Talk about preparing for an errand, a long trip, or maybe just the start or end of the day. Look at all the things you need for the car. Now think about going to pick someone up. How do you prepare to meet with someone or for someone else to see your car? Now talk about how you might prepare to meet God!

At home...

Read Exodus 19:1-20:17

God told the Israelites to be consecrated for HIM. Consecrated...that’s a big word. It means to be declared sacred, or super special. God was preparing the Israelites to be His chosen people. After they prepared for three days to meet Him, God arrived in an epic way! The Israelites saw Him, heard Him, and felt Him. A month later they forgot Him.

Talk about how the Israelites saw God, felt God, and heard God. Share stories of how you have seen, heard and/or felt God’s presence.

Around the table...

Moses gave a list of instructions to the Israelites in order for them to be ready to meet God. Discuss following instructions as you prepare the meal. What are some things you do with the different elements?

Talk about getting the meal ready: gathering the ingredients, prepping the ingredients, how cooking times differ, etc. Discuss how God is consecrating you. How is He setting you apart to be declared HIS?

GO DEEPER: Discuss times in your childhood when you were “set apart” (showing everybody that you follow God), or maybe how you missed an opportunity to be seen as set apart. Ask your child(ren) if they have any instances recently.
