Flaws and the Golden Rule

GoldenRuleLiving

In Matthew 7:12 Jesus says…
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” (NIV)

A person’s sense of self-worth is often based on the reactions, positive or negative, of those around them. Your words and attitudes can literally either build up or tear down the people around you. That fact is the background of why Jesus feels so strongly about what we now call, “The Golden Rule.”

I once read an account that drove home the importance of the Golden Rule…
Peter Foster was a RAF fighter pilot in WWII. He flew a plane called a Hurricane, which was a plane with a design flaw. The fuel lines ran right past the cockpit so that if there was a direct hit, the pilot was often engulfed in flames and the consequences were often tragic. And for Peter Foster tragedy struck when his plan was shot down. His face was burned beyond recognition.

As he glanced at his face in the mirror Peter imagined his life as he knew it was over. But he had the support and love of his family and a fiancée that stuck by him. She assured him that nothing had changed except a little bit of his skin, and two years after the tragedy they were married.

Foster says, “She became my mirror: she gave me a new image about myself. When I look at her and she gives me a smile it tells me I’m OK.”

We need to be the positive mirror of love that tells the people around us that they are ok, they are loved and valued.

1 Peter 4:8 says that “Love covers a multitude of sins.” I think it also covers a multitude of flaws, bad ideas, mistakes, accidents and miscommunication.

Let’s seek to build up those who the Lord has brought into the circle of our lives, despite the flaws, and be those who put The Golden Rule to work.
