God is Working While We Wait

Dear Quail, I am sure that you, like I, have spent time in the various “waiting rooms” of life. For instance, let’s imagine the doctor’s office waiting room. You give your name to the nurse and she checks your insurance. You take a seat and wait to be called.

The task you are called to in that place is inherent in the name; this is a waiting room, so we wait. The people in that waiting room do not begin to treat one another, we do not analyze one another’s prescriptions or illnesses, nor do we usually even talk. We wait.

Waiting is not much fun, but we wait for a reason. Prior to you being called in to the examination room, it may be that your chart is being reviewed or your case is being considered. When the wait is over and you see the doctor, he or she is able to give you advice and treatment toward health.

Let’s enlarge the waiting room concept to the time when life seems to put us “on hold” as if the entire world is one big waiting room. While you wait – God works! Pastor Grant mentioned in his message last Sunday, Joseph was thrown into jail on false charges. Eventually Joseph is promised by a fellow prisoner that after being released, he will intercede on Joseph’s behalf; however, two years go by and still that promise is not fulfilled.

Joseph waits and, during that waiting time he has plenty of time to grow bitter, cynical and resentful. However, during the waiting, God is preparing the moment when Joseph’s former cell mate will remember his promise and Joseph’s skill in interpreting dreams. Just at that moment, Pharaoh needs that kind of skill, and the stage is set for not only Joseph’s release but also his advancement to the second-in-command of the nation.

God was working all the time, behind the scenes while Joseph waited. Here are the words of Jesus…

Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." John 5:17-18, NIV

God is not idle. He does not sit and twiddle his thumbs. He never stops, never takes vacation. He is always on the job even while we wait. Now is the time when we wait and we do so with the assurance that as we wait, He works, hears our prayers and notices our patience.

“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him…” Ps 37:7, NIV

Keep Calm and Carry On!
