Show Kindness

Have you noticed that the busier you get and the faster you are moving, the less you seem to remember to show kindness to others? In Galatians 5, Paul points out that kindness is part of the Fruit of the Spirit, it is not a product of the flesh.

In other words, kindness is not going to happen automatically. We have to look to the Lord and practice this habit that He wants us to develop.

Before William McKinley was elected President of the United States, he was traveling on a full train to his congressional office. He noted that sitting up near the front of the car was one of his political colleagues. When an obviously sick woman got on the train and was unable to find a seat, McKinley noted how his colleague lifted his newspaper so that he would not make eye contact with the woman and so would not be pressured to offer her his seat.

With that, McKinley, from a few rows back, rose to his feet and gave his seat to the woman. Years later, after McKinley was elected President, that same politician was recommended for an ambassadorial position. McKinley turned him down, saying, “If his kindness today is anything like what he showed that morning on the train, I fear how he might represent us in a foreign land.” The disappointed congressman never did learn why someone else got the job.

Kindness calls for noticing the needs around you and responding in ways that will bring blessing. Kindness is part of the fruit that the Spirit of God wants to see in your life. In so doing, you will be part of the solution to the problems of the people around you and you will be representing Jesus well.

Today – show kindness!
