The Potter’s Plan

spinning-pottery

In Jeremiah 18, the prophet is sent to watch a potter working a piece of clay on his wheel. It says…

“But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” Jer. 18:4

And then the Lord adds,

"Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in My hand.” Jer. 18:6

Just like the children of Israel, we are in the hands of the Potter, and just like them, we are a work in progress. You are a work in progress! None of us has arrived, we are not yet fully formed. In the good times, it is easy to see the progress that we are making, but in the hard times, we are prone to feel like nothing good will ever come our way again. But remember, in all times you are in the Father’s hands. With those hands, He is shaping and molding you.

Here are some principles from the potter’s wheel:
  1. The potter has the right to mold the clay as he see fit. He is the expert at turning the raw material into something marvelous. That is just what God is doing in your life right now, so let Him work.
  2. The potter has an individual plan for each lump of clay.

We are not intended to be all the same, look all the same, or do all the same things. Rather, there is a plan for each one. It is, however, the potter and not the clay that determines the end product. So what is our role as lumps of clay being formed in the Potter’s hand? We must say “Yes” to what He is forming in us and submit to His plans, for they are good and perfect and right.
